Fashion is the most visible of industries – it’s exciting, it’s dynamic and it’s everywhere. All modules where possible link to the fashion industry, preparing the students for the realities of the working world. There are specific modules that focus on live projects, competitions, entrepreneurial and business skills and students placements. However, we encourage students to gain part-time work experience whilst they’re on the course – retail, customer service and volunteering all offer opportunities to develop useful skills and attributes.

We’ll take you on a range of visits to various cities including London, Manchester and Leeds etc for industry specific visits such as textile mills, fashion head offices, testing houses. We will explore inspirational galleries and exhibitions. You’ll get plenty of notice of these activities so that you can budget accordingly, some visits may be free, but others will incur a charge varying with the nature of the visit and the distance travelled. Such charges will be kept to a reasonable rate.

Before you begin your course, you’ll need to make sure you’re prepared with the right equipment. Many of our courses need specialist health and safety clothing, but we’ve made it simple - some of your essentials and college branded clothing can be bought from our online shop.

For your course, you will need:

  • A tablet, smartphone or laptop to take notes in lectures and seminars
  • You may wish to use your own laptop to work on your designs both at college and in your own time
  • A3 sketchbooks or Folders
  • Sewing box equipment including dress making pins, hand sewing needles, fabric shears, pinking shears, tape measure, unpicker, pin cushion and tailors chalk
  • Scale Pattern master, full size
  • Technical pencils, scotch tape and paper scissors
  • A range of art materials including pencils, pens, rubber, sharpener, watercolours, paintbrushes, masking tapes and glue sticks
  • Paper - to include tracing paper, craft paper/card and cartridge paper
  • Adobe Creative Cloud – students can get an introductory discount on this package
  • USB stick and / or portable hard drive
  • You may wish to invest in your own sewing machine / overlocker to work on your projects at home in your own time
  • You will also require calico, fabrics and other haberdashery materials - the amount spent on these is a reflection of the student's work and decisions made by the student when selecting elements such as fabric for production of their coursework.
