FdA Design

Please arrive at the college by 9am to complete your enrolment - it should take no longer than an hour.  Please follow the campus signage to find the conference hall. If you are unable to make it in for enrolment, please let us know by emailing or by calling 0800 731 8281. Once enrolled, you will take part in induction activities all day so please expect to stay on campus all day. 

In order to successfully enrol, please ensure you bring:

  • A form of photo ID
  • National Insurance number
  • Exam results slip
  • Student Finance information.

Please note, you must meet the entry requirements for the programme you have been accepted onto in order to enrol successfully. If you do not meet requirements, your enrolment on the programme will be at the discretion of the programme leader.

There will be some arranged visits during your course to a range of relevant design related venues as well as talks / presentations from a range of subject specialists. Trips may include Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Imperial War Museum North, The Design Museum and the NEC.

Some visits may be free, but others will incur a charge varying with the nature of the visit and the distance travelled. Such charges will be kept to a reasonable rate. Further details on venues, timings and costs will be supplied at that point.

Before you begin your course, you’ll need to make sure you’re prepared with the right equipment. Many of our courses need specialist health and safety clothing, but we’ve made it simple - some of your essentials and college branded clothing can be bought from our online shop.

For your course, you will need:

  • A tablet, smartphone or laptop to take notes in lectures and seminars
  • You may wish to use your own laptop to work on your designs both at college and in your own time
  • Sketchbooks and portfolios
  • Art materials – technical pens (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7), technical pencil, pencil crayons, watercolour, paint brushes, pro-markers, sketching pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener, circle template etc.
  • Paper - A2, A3, A4, and to include tracing paper, layout paper, cartridge paper, model making card, foam board etc. dependent upon the design project
  • Printing - you will also need to invest in printing your final work on presentation quality paper. This is available at Bishop Burton College Reprographics or Staples, Blurb, Lulu, Vistaprint, Moo etc., -  prices will vary according to size
  • Glue – Pritt stick, UHU, spray mount adhesive, double sided sticky tape, masking tape and a hot glue gun.
  • Cutting mat
  • Steel ruler
  • Scissors
  • Scale ruler
  • Adjustable set square
  • Microsoft Office – free to all students upon enrolment
  • Adobe Creative Cloud – students can get an introductory discount on this package
  • Autodesk AutoCAD – student can download the latest version for free for three years
  • SketchUp - free download available to students
  • USB stick and / or portable hard drive
  • A digital camera.
