A mandatory part of your studies will involve a two-week placement with Tigers Trust and the National Citizenship Service (NCS) programme where you will take part in the following:

  • Five day residential at an outdoor adventure centre
  • First aid training (with qualification upon successful completion)
  • Volunteering activities
  • Training with the Fire Service
  • Collaborative work with Tigers Trust staff organising and running recreational activities

There is a cost to this activity (approx. £35) which you will need to cover, and this will be paid when you enrol.

We also have excellent links with a wide range of employers in the public service industry where you can discover a future career by taking part in a wide range of trips and visits. We also hold annual study trips, including:

  • Practical visits and exercises with the fire, ambulance and police emergency services
  • Experiences with the RAF, the Army, the Royal Marines and the Navy
  • A vast array of outdoor adventurous activities including kayaking, rock climbing and fell walking to name just a few.

You will get plenty of notice of these visits and trips so that you can save for them, although we try and keep them as cheap as possible. We have found that these activities enrich our students and your predecessors have all urged that we continue to provide a breadth of visits for you all. We are aware of the cost and so we will provide you with as much notice as possible and will always source the best deals. As part of the course students also take part in work experience/volunteering opportunities.

Before you begin your course, you’ll need to make sure you’re prepared with the right equipment. Many of our courses need specialist health and safety clothing, but we’ve made it simple - some of your essentials and college branded clothing can be bought from our online shop.

For your course, you will need:

  • Folder with dividers to organise your work and assignments
  • Stationery including notepad for use in class, pens and pencils
  • USB pen drive (for saving your work)
  • It is advised that you purchase sports kit for both indoor and outdoor activities. We have college branded sports kit available to order if you wish. We usually have sample sizes available at both enrolment and also the first few weeks of term to try on, however all size guides for the various items are available online and students will receive an email with a link to the clothing shop in due course if you wish to purchase before the start of term.
  • Waterproof outdoor clothing and footwear suitable for all weather conditions
  • Walking boots
  • Towel and shower gel for post-practical showering.
